2S.1 SAR Subject First Encounter
This course will prepare you to adequately handle the initial moments of encountering a SAR subject. From communication to first aid care, you can make a difference in the outcome of the subject and the mission. This course is for all SAR responders.
24S.1 Safe Trailer Operations for SAR
This an approximately 30 minute course that familiarizes SAR and other responders with safe use of a trailer. 0.5 CE hours
3S.1 Mental Health for SAR Responders
This 1.5 hour course provides the responder with essential knowledge of mental health concerns in emergency response, including responder stress injuries as well as tools for Psychological First Aid.
4S.1 Crime Scene Recognition & Evidence Preservation for SAR
Recognize potential crime scenes and evidence items. Take steps to avoid scene contamination and evidence loss during search, rescue and recovery operations.
5S.1 Flexible Rescue Litters: SKED, TRS & MedSled
Flexible litters excel in portability, confined terrain and other rescue situations. Learn setup, packaging and use of the SKED, MedSled and TRS flexible litter systems for trail and technical evacuation.
6S.1 Helicopter RECCO SAR for Searchers & Leaders
This 35 minute course equips SAR leaders and responders with knowledge of the Helicopter RECCO SAR, including its capabilities and limitations, preparing them for effective use of of the system in lost person search.
7S.1 Field Search Tactics
Learn essential the concepts of field search including: clue awareness, subject profile, interviewing, containment, attraction, night search, hazard zones, basic tracking, hasty , open grid, close grid, and evidence searches. 0.75 CE credits.
8S.1 SAR Land Navigation
This revised 2 hour course covers the fundamentals of land navigation for backcountry SAR, including, lat/long, UTM, USNG, datums, GPS, topographic maps, compass use, triangulation, and route finding.
9S.1 Working with K9 Resources in SAR
Learn how search K9s detect subjects, how scent interacts with environment, SAR k9s types, their use, benefits, and limitations, how to evaluate K9 resources in your region, and how to support K9 operations in the field.
10S.1 Basic SAR Survival
Learn how to survive and stay effective if things dont go as planned during a SAR mission with survival priorities, emergency shelters, signaling, water treatment, fire building and the STOP framework. 1 CE hours.
11S.1 ICS and Professionalism in SAR response
Contextualizes ICS principles to SAR for field responders , including chain of command, span of control, and briefing / debriefing process. Aspects of responder professionalism before, during and after response are also reviewed. 0.75 CE credits.
12S.1 GPS & Satellite Navigation in SAR
Get the full benefit from your GPS satellite navigation receiver in SAR. Learn the menus, calibration and how to adjust datum/coordinates, set waypoints, create routes, use the track log and share data between your GPS and computer. 1 CE hours.
13S.1 Cases in SAR litigation
Learn about the the likelihood of and common reasons for litigation involving SAR missions and teams. SAR physician Dr Tim Durkin and experienced attorney Kendrick Dane discuss over a dozen lawsuits involving SAR teams and missions. 1.5 CE hours
14S.1 Gear & Clothing for SAR
Learn about gear and clothing needed for backcountry Search and Rescue, its selection and savy purchasing for the new or candidate SAR member.
15S.1 Understanding Radios for SAR
Learn how two-way radios work and how to best use them in a SAR response environment in this 1.5 hour course. Covers theory, correct procedures, and problem solving in fringe radio coverage areas.
16S.1 Common Knots in Rescue
This course demonstrates over a dozen knots that are common and useful in rescue, with context on how they are used. For more complicated knots, the course will show both technique variations and errors in tying these knots. 0.75 CE hours
17S.1 Litter Packaging and Evacuation
This course covers rescue litter types, features and assembly/disassembly, several techniques for patient packaging, and patient movement strategies in a trail or other evacuation that does not involve technical rope work. 1 CE hours.
18S.1 Helicopter Operations for SAR Responders
This approximately 1 hour course covers foundational safety and operational considerations for working with helicopters as a SAR responder, and meets NASAR aviation safety course requirements.
19S.1 Risk Management and Decision Making in SAR
Learn to identify, quantity and manage risk. Recognize positive / negative personal or group behaviors and common cognitive errors. Correctly use risk evaluation tools including GAR, GAR 2.0, RADeMS and IMSAFE. 0.75 CE Hours.
20S.1 Health & Fitness for Backcountry Responders
Maintain your health and improve your fitness to respond in the backcountry, covering topics like health concerns for responders, fitness training and nutrition. This course is taught by a board certified sports medicine physician.
21S.1 Intro to Firearm Safety for SAR Responders
Learn basic gun safety and handling concepts for the SAR or EMS responder. Covered topics include the core rules of firearm safety as well as how to handle firearms and make safe a variety of firearm types. 0.75 CE hours
22S.1 Naloxone Use for Opiate Overdose First Aid
This 30 minute course covers opiate overdose recognition, first aid, and aftercare. Additional topics include recognition and understanding the action of opiates and naloxone. You should have recent training in CPR before taking this course.
23S.1 Legal Concepts in SAR
Learn legal topics important in SAR from an attorney and a physician. Concepts covered include: duty to act, negligence, volunteer protections, consent, responsible agency, HIPAA, abandonment, standard of care, land access and others.
Knowledge Foundation for Technical Rope Rescue (Beta Test)
This course prepares new rope rescuers with academic knowledge of rope rescue, system components and applications so they can succeed during hands on team training in the field.
